Storms move northwards

The Environment Agency has issued seven severe flood warnings for the north-east and has warned of more heavy rain to come.

Yesterday, heavy rain on Wales, the south-west and the Midlands saw flooding in these areas but now the warning is for the north-east, the agency said.

"We are monitoring the river levels throughout England and Wales closely in order to provide the most up to date flood warning information.

"We are doing everything possible to identify key risk areas and protect local communities. Our staff have been manning incident rooms around the clock and supporting the emergency services and the local authorities on the ground.

"We are urging people in affected areas, especially the north-east, to be vigilant," the Environment Agency said in a statement.

The winds and rain yesterday hit Wales particularly badly, with about 50mm of rainfall causing flooding and a landslide in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The storms have been blamed for the deaths of five people, including that of a 17-year-old girl who died in Wales after the 4x4 she was in overturned in a river.

A couple were also killed in a car accident in Plymouth, while in Stroud, Gloucestershire, a 27-year-old workman died after a trench collapsed in torrential rain.

A 42-year-old motorcyclist from Sheffield was also killed after hitting a tree branch on the A66 near Darlington.
